SOLAR CELL TECHNOLOGY

Solarmer Energy Inc. is a leader in the development of innovative photovoltaic technology - plastic solar panel technology, which converts solar energy into electricity in a very cost-effective way. In addition with being cost-effective, plastic solar panels are also flexible, light weight, and thin, which enables new applications, not possible using traditional silicon solar panel technology. Solarmer's transparent solar panels will further increase the amount of products that plastic solar panels could be integrated into.

Traditional silicon based solar panels currently dominate the solar market with 90% market share. However, even with over 50-years of development, the commercial success has been limited due to the exorbitant costs of silicon and difficulties associated with manufacturing silicon-based solar panels. The cost of generating electricity using silicon solar modules is typically 10 times higher than that from fossil fuel. Plastic solar panel technology addresses the cost issue in various ways.

Plastic solar cell technology addresses the cost issue in 3 major ways:

1. Raw material cost is low. Low cost plastic is used as the active materials to convert solar energy into electricity.

2. Low material usage. The extraordinary light absorption capability of the plastics leads to extremely thin active plastics layer - only a few tenth of micrometer thick, i.e. less than 1/1000 of silicon cell. This material cost is significantly lower.

3. Low manufacturing cost. Very low cost printing techniques will be used to manufacture plastic solar cells (Similar to printing on newspaper). The combination gives much lower cost of equivalent energy (only 10 - 20% that of silicon technology). In addition, the fabrication process is both low temperature and environmentally friendly, significantly reduces the amount of energy consumption in the manufacturing process.

Plastic solar cell technology also provides more attractive attributes:

Organic plastic is intrinsically flexible and easy to bond to flexible substrates such as plastic and metal foils. Combined with the extremely thin active layer, this enables light weight and flexible applications.

Organic chemistry provides extreme flexibility of material design in the molecular level. Molecular engineering enables high efficiency active plastics with a wide range of colors. This opens up a whole new area of solar cell application not achievable by the traditional solar cell.

Transparent OPV: Solarmer's transparent plastic solar cell technology combines our leading active plastic material technology and transparent electrode technology. As a result, this produces transparent solar cells with a wide option of colors.
